LEDs Magazine
LED backlight DisplaySearch in the latest quarterly report,the company reported that, LED backlight units will surpassCCFL/EEFL backlights in large-area TFT LCD panels in 2011, andachieve 74% penetration in 2013.
Large areas of LED backlighting for all applications thatdemand will grow to 114 million units in 2009 to 7.7 millionunits in 2015.
The figure shows the penetration of LED backlight units,including notebook computers, LCD monitors and LCD TVapplications.
DisplaySearch forecasts the shipments of LED backlight unitsfor LCD TV rose from 36.5 million units (20% penetration in 2010)to 184.9 million (72% penetration in 2015).
The cost and performance is still used in display panels LEDbacklight panel makers bottleneck. Nevertheless, the Energy Star5.0 specification will drive this market growth. In particular, theliquid crystal display manufacturers are mass producing 18.5”W-24”WLCD monitor panels with LED backlight units. DisplaySearch predictsthat <26” LCD TVs with LED backlights, mainly using monitorpanels, will grow rapidly also, as the cost premium isacceptable.
The notebook PC segment has the highest LED backlight unitpenetration rate, as the power-saving benefit justifies the costpremium compared to CCFL BLU. At the same time, the prices forside-view, high-intensity (1,900-2,200 MCD) white LED stock pricecontinued to decline. Thus, LED backlights will have an 84% shareof notebook PC shipments in 2010 and will be nearly 95% in2011 .
