Some eye diseases destroy the photoreceptors in the eye, butleave the image processing layer of intact neurons.

Sliding between neurons and damage the chip includes aphotosensitive layer of neurons under the photodiode array, theimplant can receive images focused by the eye's existing opticalsystem, and inject signals directly into the originalneurons.

The chip, which is 3 mm wide, 50 microns thick, has a pitch of70μm photodiode array 40x40, together with the correspondingelectrode array.

According to reports, the photodiode of this size can notgenerate enough power to directly stimulate neurons, so the chipincludes signal conditioning, and shall accept from an externalsource of power.

This is provided along a cable that exits through the side ofthe eyeball and is led to an inductively coupled power receiverunder the skin near the subject's ear.
