LED Backlight Cuts LCD Monitor Power Consumption by 72 %

Eizo Nanao Corp announced the "Eizo FlexScanEV2411W-H"24.1-inchLCD monitor that uses white LEDs as itsbacklight source.
This is the first time that Nanao has released awhiteLED-backlitLCD monitor, it said.
The monitor will go on sale from Oct 16, 2008. Thereisnosuggested retail price, but the monitor will be soldonthecompany's "Eizo Direct" direct marketing website at apriceof¥84,800 (approx US$791).
The new product adopts an edge type backlight system,inwhichlamps are positioned on both the top and bottom sides ofanLCDpanel. A total of 160 white LEDs are used with 80 LEDsofthempositioned on each side.
The monitor also features an "Auto EcoView"functionthatautomatically adjusts the backlight's luminance inaccordancewiththe external brightness detected by the luminancesensorequippedon the bottom of the monitor.
Through the adoption of the LED backlight system andtheluminancesensor, the company succeeded in realizing nearly a28%reduction inpower consumption compared with the previousmodel,the "EIZOFlexScan S2401W," which uses a cold cathodefluorescentlamp (CCFL)backlight system, Nanao said.
The monitor supports an "EcoView Index" function thatdisplaysthepower saving efficiency on the LCD monitor at the pressof abutton.
The 1920 x 1200 resolution monitor employs TN formatdisplaymode.Horizontal and vertical viewing angles are both178°(minimumcontrast ratio is 5:1). The surfaceluminanceis300cd/m2 and the contrast ratio is 1,000:1.Theresponsespeed is 5ms and the color reproduction range is 72% oftheNTSCstandard.
In addition, the monitor supports "EcoView NET,"anapplicationthat enables a single client PC to arrangesettings,including thepower supply and the display luminance, ofmultipleLCD monitorsmanufactured by Nanao. EcoView Net can only berun onWindowsVista. The company is planning to start providingthesoftware forfree from November 2008.
