Philips to up production to meetglobal demand

The EURO 27-billion Philips, which announced yesterdayitsplansto acquire Navi Mumbai-based cardiovascularX-raysystem-makerAlpha X-Ray Technologies, is planning toscaleproductionfacilities to meet global demand for lightingsolutionsand otherproducts, said Murali Sivaraman, managingdirector andchiefexecutive of Philips Electronics India.

The firm’s Noida centre, which developsadvancedlightingsolutions, will be scaled up and linked to theglobaldevelopmentcentre at Shanghai, China. Philips will initiallyassignengineerswith projects in Shanghai and will then transferthem toNoida toimplement the solutions.

As part of this strategy, Philips will investintestingfacilities and ramp up operations by recruitinganadditional 35engineers, he said. However, the company refusedtogive details ofhow much they planned to spend to raiseproductioncapacities anddevelopment centres.

The Rs 2,890-crore Philips India has two manufacturingcentresatMohali and Vadodara for lighting solutions and planstoincreasecapacity to cater to the domestic and emergingmarketrequirements.The manufacturing capacity of CompactFluorescent Lamp(CFL) wasrecently increased in view of the domesticdemand.

Lighting solutions account for about 40-45 per centofPhilipsIndia turnover, and the company commands a market shareofover 25per cent for lamps and lighting electronic products inthecountry.

Philips is planning to launch new energy-efficientproductssuchas LEDs, illumination solutions for shops, malls,stadiumsandstreet lighting in the country. The firm hasdevelopedpowersolutions that can handle extreme voltagefluctuations andthecompany plans to exports such products tocountries havingsimilarpower problems, said Sivaraman.

Bert van Meurs, senior vice president, PhilipsHealthcaresaidcompany would ramp up the making and R&Dfacilities ofacquiredAlpha X-Ray Technologies for supply ofeconomiccardiovascularX-ray systems for various emerging markets.

“We are looking at constant growth and Philips havespentoverEURO 10 billion on acquisitions. India will be a majorfocusareafor us, for both organic and inorganic opportunitiesforrighttechnologies and products,” he said.

At present, Philips is a market leader in the countryformedicalequipments such as critical care products like ECGsandintensivecare equipments and diagnostics imaging products,saidAnjan Bose,senior director and business head ofPhilipsHealthcare.
