The Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) sensorsfortheautomotivemarket is set for rapid growth over thenextfour-years,accordingto a new report from iSuppli Corp.Themarketresearchfirm forecastsworldwide automotive MEMS sensorshipmentswill growto 935.7million units in 2012, rising at aCompound AnnualGrowthRate(CAGR) of 12 percent from 474.2 millionunits in2006.Theautomotive MEMS sensor market is therefore settooutgrowtheautomotive and car electronics segmentsaltogether,iSupplisaid. “Driving the rapid growth of the automotive MEMSsensormarketinthe United States and Europe is a setofchassissafety-relatedmandates that makes compulsorytheimplementation ofElectronicStability Control (ESC) systemsandtire-pressuremonitors,” saidRichard Dixon, senior analyst forMEMSat iSuppli.“Bothapplications significantly contribute tosavinglives on theroads,and tire-pressure monitors also lowerfuelconsumption.”
Shipments of MEMS pressure sensors forTirePressureMonitoringSystems (TPMSs) are expected to reach 179millionunitsin 2012, upfrom 43.1 million in 2006. Shipments ofMEMSinertialand pressuresensors used in ESC systems will increaseto158million units in2012, increasing at a CAGR of 17 percentfrom61.6million units in2006.
The challenge will be Government mandates thathaveheraldedagreater level of commoditization, which will leadtopriceerosionin MEMS sensor products, as all suppliersprovideproductsthatconform to government specifications, andwhichaccommodate arangespanning the most expensive to thecheapestavailable vehicle.
This will reshape the competitive landscape for MEMSsensorsduetoincreased competition, according to themarketresearchfirm.
