Smartphone Market Continues To Grow

The worldwide smartphone marketcontinued to weather the economic recession and reached a newrecord for shipments during a single quarter. According to IDC'sWorldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped a totalof 43.3 million units during the third quarter of 2009 (3Q09), up4.2% from the 41.5 million units shipped in 3Q08, and up 3.2% fromshipments of 41.9 million units in 2Q09.
"Demand for converged mobile devices has remained strong allyear," said Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC's MobileDevices Technology and Trends team. "These devices provide moreutility and entertainment than traditional mobile phones. Moreover,users have plenty of devices from which to choose, whether it be amultimedia powerhouse, a messaging machine, or a social networkingtool. As users expect greater functionality from their devicesbeyond telephony, we believe the converged mobile device market togrow faster than the overall mobile phone market."

Converged MobileDevices – These mobile devices are eithervoice or data centric and are capable of synchronizing personalinformation and/or email with server, desktop, or laptop computers.These devices must match wireless telephony capability to highlevel operating systems, include the ability to download data tolocal storage, run applications, and store user data beyond PIMcapabilities. Converged mobile devices must offer the full extentof their application processing capability to the user, regardlessof network availability.
