Since year 2000, Murmansk regionalauthoritieshavetogether with the Norwegian Finnmark countygovernor removedall theradioactive lighthouses (RITEGs) from theRussian BarentsSea coast.As many as 85 of the lighthouses werelocated inMurmansk Oblast,while 68 of them were in ArkhangelskOblast.

With the removal of the lighthouses, the two Russian regionshavegotrid of a potentially dangerous source of radiation,apossibleterrorist threat.

All the 153 lighthouses have been sent to theMayaknuclearreprocessing plant outside Chelyabinsk inWesternSiberia.

Norway has funded the replacement of the strontiumlighthouseswithsolar-cell installations.
