Seagate Technology is planningto launch a new drive, which drives 25 percent thinner than theexisting models.
Notebook hard drive is either 9.5 millimeters or high-12.5 mmhigh. The thicker drives generally offer greater capacity becausean extra 2.5-inch diameter storage platter can be accommodatedinside. And the company was preparing to introduce the industry'sfirst 2.5-inch, 7 mm high hard drive. This new ultra-thin productsto reduce the thickness and weight, allowing users to easilycarry.
Seagate said the new drive will mean "significantly lowercost-per-gigabyte storage than solid state and 1.8-inch drives,enabling a new breed of entry-level thin laptops."
The drive is scheduled to be officially announced on Jan. 5,two days before the International Consumer Electronics Show is dueto begin in Las Vegas.
