Increasing demand boosts IC price

Contract prices for 2GB DDR3 DRAM modules increased by about 9%to $24 in July because of tight supply and increasing migration toDDR3 rising demand and inventory restocking.

According to researcher DRAMeXchange, increasing demand for DDR3is being fueled by aggressive transition to the memory technologyby notebook computer manufacturers. For instance, 70% of notebooksmade by Acer will be equipped with DDR3 in the fourth quarter, according to the researcher, HP and Dell will also transition theirmainstream notebooks to DDR3, but DRAMeXchange says the changeoverwill occur next year.

Acer believes it can boost its market share by being an earlyadopter of DDR3 memory. As a result of Acer's aggressive plans forDDR3, other PC OEMs may transition to DDR3 quicker than expected toprotect market share.

The main improvement of DDR3 over DDR2 is its ability totransfer at twice the data rate of DDR2. That results in higher busand higher peak rates. DDR3 can also be used with higher DRAMdensities than DDR2.
