Gartner has recently announced its report whichpredictstheglobaltelecommunication industry to reach an estimated$2Trillionin 2008,growing at a rate of 7.6 percent from the2007revenue of$1.8Trillion. The report also estimates thattheAsia/Pacificregion willsurpass North America, which has beenthetraditionalmarket leader interms of revenue generated bythetelecommarkets.
"Revenue from telecom services hastraditionallydominatedthemarket, accounting for four out of everyfive dollarsearned inthesector," said Will Hahn, Principal ResearchAnalyst,Gartner."Weforecast that this historic proportion willnowshrinkanindication that legacy revenue is no longersufficientforcarriersto justify their investments and that thegrowingequipmentsectoris being deployed to support new andconvergedservices, aswell,"Hahn added.
The research company has estimated that revenuesfromthetelecomservices segment will reach $1.6 Trillion in2008thusaccountingfor 81 percent of the total telecom revenue.Italsoestimates thatby 2012 the services segment will have aCAGRrateof 4.4 percentcompared to the 8.7 percent of theequipmentsegmentresulting inthe relative proportions of the twosegmentswillfinally begin tomove downward, closer to 3-to-1.
"Traditional telecom service providersandequipmentmanufacturersare seeing convergent trends erodingtheirmarginswhile rising Asianplayers and other entrants eat awayattheirshare within the totalmarket," explained Hahn."Telecomserviceproviders and equipmentmanufacturers alike mustpreparegrowthplans that transform theirofferings andtheirorganizations.Growth in legacy markets is ebbingfast, and theonlyway tomaintain it will be via the scope toofferconvergedsolutions, toprovide service in nontraditionalsectors andto enterand win inemerging markets whose profile is verydifferentfrommore-matureregions," informed Hahn.
From a regional perspective Asia/Pacific isforecasttosurpassNorth America which has been thelargesttelecommunicationsmarket,in telecom revenue in 2008. Thereportestimates that whiletheNorth American telecom revenue isestimatedto reach a totalof$511.6 billion in 2008, a 4.5 percentincreasefrom 2007theAsia/Pacific telecom revenue is projected toreach$513.1billionin 2008, up 8 percent from 2007. Meanwhile, theMiddleEastandAfrica will be the fastest-growing region with aCAGRof8.6percent between 2007 and 2012.
