Siemens sells N.H. business unit to Microscan

Siemens AG’s Nashua, N.H.-based machine vision business unithasbeenbought by Microscan Systems Inc. Microscan said it plans tokeeptheNashua location open and retain the majority oftheworkforce,although further financial terms of the dealwerenotdisclosed.

The Siemens machine vision unit was formerly RVSI Acuity CiMatrix,which Siemens Energy & AutomationInc.purchased in 2005 for anundisclosed amount. Acuity CiMatrixhadbeen a subsidiary of RoboticVisions Systems Inc. of Nashua.

Microscan is a Renton, Wash.-based automaticidentification,andcode-scanning technology company. Microscan saidthe buyisintended to strengthen its position in the traceabilitymarketbyexpanding further into machine vision imaging andinspection.Thecompany said it expects the deal to close onFriday.

Siemens Energy & Automation said the sale will allow ittofocuson its industrial identification business segmentandstrengthen itsRFID and code-reading systems portfolio. In2004,RVSI sold itssemiconductor equipment group in order to focusonthe AcuityCiMatrix machine vision and data matrixsymbologybusiness.

Also in 2004, Acuity CiMatrix received a blanketorderforapproximately $1.1 million from an unnamed partner forDataMatrixreading and machine vision inspection equipment.Thetechnology hadbeen planned for use by an automotive manufacturertoread DataMatrix 2-D codes marked on automotive componentsandprintedcircuit boards, and to monitor andcontrolmanufacturingprocesses.
