Cray teams up with Microsoft on new $25,000 supercomputer

Cray Inc. said it’s teamingupwithMicrosoftCorp.ona new supercomputer that will start ataround $25,000.
Seattle-based Cray offers supercomputerproductscostingmillionsof dollars; its new CX1 model will useMicrosoft(NASDAQ:MSFT)Windows HPC Server software andIntelCorp.Xeonprocessors with prices ranging from$25,000 to $60,000.
It’s the cheapest computer that Cray (NASDAQ:CRAY)haseverproduced and according to the company,it’sthehighest-performingcomputer that uses standard office power.
Officials at marketing company IDC of Framingham,Mass.,saidtheCX1’s market will grow.
“IDC research shows that HPC has been one ofthehighest-growthITmarkets during the past five years and thesegmentfor HPCsystemspriced below $100,000 is headed forcontinuedgrowth, saidEarlJoseph, IDC’s HPC program vice president,in astatement.
Shares in Cray rose nearly 15 percent in Tuesdaytrading,rising69cents to close at $5.32.
